women in engineering

The barriers against women in science and engineering have been formidable. When I had to do my engineering homework I found out that MIT was the first high-prestige school to admit women, starting in the 1890s. In the 1960s, Caltech, Princeton, Harvard and several others were still men-only. Small-group discussions at MIT would be rife with sexist comments, and the percentage enrollments by women in physical sciences and engineering were in single digits. I'm happy to see MIT now entering among the equal opportunity schools.
